Rear-seat space and comfort. The CR-V's back seat reclines and offers more legroom than most of the compact class, and its door openings are wider, which matters with car seats. Families who sit in both usually notice this first.

Interior materials and layout. The CR-V's cabin uses a cleaner horizontal design with physical climate controls and a metal-mesh vent strip that hides the outlets. It reads as the more expensive interior of the two at comparable trims.

Ride quality. The CR-V rides softer over broken pavement, which on the US-280 corridor is a daily consideration rather than a spec-sheet one.

Maximum cargo with the seats down. 71.8 cubic feet against 70.4, a small edge that comes from the CR-V's lower load floor.

Fuel economy. 43 MPG combined against 40 for the front-drive base trims, per the EPA. Over 12,000 miles a year that is roughly 21 fewer gallons, about $80 at $3.80 a gallon. Real, but smaller than the three-MPG gap sounds.

Power. 236 total system horsepower against 204. The RAV4 is quicker, and it feels it when merging.

Towing. The RAV4 Hybrid is rated for 1,750 pounds on the LE and up to 3,500 pounds with AWD on SE and higher trims. The CR-V Hybrid is rated for 1,000 pounds. If you tow a small trailer, this decides it.

Starting price and battery warranty. The RAV4 Hybrid starts lower, and Toyota covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles against Honda's 8 years or 100,000. Both are long; Toyota's is longer.

Cargo behind the rear seats. 37.8 cubic feet against 36.3 with the seats up.

The recommendation

Which one should you buy?

Buy the RAV4 Hybrid if you tow anything, if you want the most miles per gallon available in the class, or if the lower starting price and longer battery warranty are what tip a decision for you. For some readers it is the better fit, and we would rather say so than have you find out after.

Buy the CR-V Hybrid if the back seat is occupied most days, if you value a quieter, softer ride on rough roads, or if you sit in both and prefer the CR-V's cabin. Those are the reasons most CR-V Hybrid buyers give us, and they are good ones.

Either way, both are hybrid-only choices that need no plug, both come from manufacturers with strong reliability records in third-party surveys, and both hold their value well. This is a choice between two good answers. Drive both, back to back if you can, and let the seat and the road decide.
